Prime Minister Mark Carney is heading the first Canada Investment Summit in Toronto, a gathering that aims to unlock about $1 trillion of foreign capital over the next five years.

The summit puts 167 projects on the table, from pipelines to AI, hoping to attract $1 trillion in new money.

The prospectus lists projects in eight categories, including conventional and clean energy, mining, marine infrastructure, digital technology, advanced manufacturing and transport. Energy and mining together account for more than half of the opportunities.

Investors have previously been turned off by long turnaround times and regulatory complexity in Canada, which have made approval processes seem slow and uncertain.

A TD Bank report says the influx of investment could trigger a decade‑long ‘supercycle’, raising real output per capita by roughly $12,000 per person and creating many new jobs.

Critics, including NDP leader Avi Lewis, warn that the summit could hand control of Canadian assets to foreign firms and demand full transparency on any deals.

If the government can streamline approvals and keep the terms transparent, the summit could boost GDP, modernise infrastructure and protect Canadian sovereignty, while a failure could leave the country dependent on outside investors without clear benefits.
