Settlement Secures U.S. Film Jobs and News Independence in Paramount‑Warner Deal

A new settlement could keep thousands of American film workers on the job and guard newsrooms, even as Paramount moves to buy Warner Bros. Discovery for $81 billion.

Twelve U.S. states and the Writers Guild of America filed lawsuits to block the $81 billion acquisition. On Monday they agreed to settle, removing a major antitrust obstacle for the merger.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced that Paramount will spend at least an extra $1.5 billion on U.S. film production over the next five years and will set up a system to monitor editorial independence of its news operations.

The agreement also bans writer layoffs at CBS News for five years and includes a $17.5 million contribution to the Writers Guild of America’s health fund.

The settlement still needs a judge’s final sign‑off and pushes the closing of the merger back by several months.

By tying the merger to concrete spending and employment safeguards, the settlement aims to protect American film jobs, boost domestic production, and keep newsrooms free from corporate influence, even as the combined company would own studios, networks like CBS and CNN, streaming services HBO Max and Paramount+, and libraries that contain titles such as Harry Potter and Top Gun.
