Why Los Angeles Prosecutors Chose Not to Seek the Death Penalty for Nick Reiner

Nick Reiner was indicted last month for the murders of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, whose bodies were found with stab wounds on Dec. 14, 2025, in their Brentwood home in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced that the DA’s office will not seek the death penalty and that the most severe punishment Reiner could receive is life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

Hochman explained that the decision followed a rigorous review of both aggravating and mitigating circumstances, and involved consultations with the victims’ family, other prosecutors and law‑enforcement officials, as well as senior staff in the district attorney’s office.

The trial is not expected to begin before 2027. After defense attorney Alan Jackson withdrew from the case, Reiner is now represented by public defender Kimberly Greene.

By opting for life without parole instead of capital punishment, the DA’s office demonstrates how California’s legal system balances the seriousness of the crime with any factors that might lessen the defendant’s culpability, while still ensuring a severe penalty.
