On August 15, 2026, Korea celebrated its 81st Liberation Day. This day remembers Korea's freedom from Japanese rule. Many celebrities have family ties to the people who fought for Korea's freedom.

Here are some celebrities who have family ties to Korean freedom fighters:

Hong Ji Min is a musical actress. Her ancestor, Hong Chang Sik, was part of a secret group called Baekdusanhoe. He did a mission to destroy Japanese military supplies when he was 16. He was put in jail for his actions and was still in jail when Korea became free. Hong Ji Min did not know about her father's past until he got an award in 1977.

Yoon Joo Bin is an actor. His great-uncle, Dr. Yoon Bong Gil, was a famous independence activist. In 1932, Dr. Yoon bombed a Japanese event in Shanghai. He was caught and executed. Yoon Joo Bin did not talk about his connection to Dr. Yoon for seven years after he became an actor. He said his family did not want him to use Dr. Yoon's honor for personal gain.

Park Hwan Hee is an actress. Her grandfather, Ha Jong Jin, was an independence activist. He gave out Korean flags during the 1919 March First Movement. He led a student strike and was put in jail. Ha Jong Jin led many strikes and was arrested again. He was given an award after he died.

Kim Ji Seok is an actor. His grandfather, Kim Sung Il, was a well-known independence activist. Kim Sung Il joined a group to fight for independence when he was 14. He was caught and tortured. In 2015, he was given an award for his work.

Lee Seo Jin is an actor. His great-grandfather, Seokju Lee Sang Ryong, was an independence activist. He gave up his family's money and home to fight against Japanese rule. The Korean government gave him an award after he died.

Yi Chen is a member of a boy group. He is related to independence activist Ahn Jung Geun. Yi Chen's great-great-grandfather was Ahn Myung Geun, who worked with Ahn Jung Geun. Ahn Jung Geun killed a Japanese leader, and Ahn Myung Geun was caught for planning to kill another Japanese leader.
