What Australia Can Learn from US Backlash Over Data‑Centre Power Price Hikes

In June, hundreds of North Carolina community members gathered outside a Durham courthouse to protest a proposed 18% increase in electricity rates that they say is driven by upcoming data‑centre projects. The protest reflects a broader U.S. trend: the number of data centres grew from roughly 3,000 in 2021 to about 4,000 in 2026, according to the World Resources Institute.
