Perseid Meteor Shower and Solar Eclipse to Appear in the Sky

Canadians will see a Perseid meteor shower and a partial solar eclipse next week.

The Canadian Space Agency says the Perseid meteor shower is the best of the year. It will peak on August 12-13.

Pierre Langlois from the CSA says it's a great show if you are patient and in the right place.

A NASA spokesperson says the meteor shower happens when Earth passes through debris from a comet.

The debris enters Earth's atmosphere fast and leaves behind streaks of light, or meteors.

Langlois says it's like driving into snow and seeing snowflakes. The meteors are like that.

The Perseid meteor shower can be seen from the Northern Hemisphere from late July to mid-August.

There will also be a partial solar eclipse, which is another big event in the sky.

A partial solar eclipse happens when the Moon, Sun, and Earth are not perfectly lined up.

During a solar eclipse, people outside the Moon's shadow see a partial eclipse.

Langlois says the further you are from big cities, the better you can see the meteor shower.

Newfoundland and Labrador will have the best view of the eclipse.

Spain and Iceland will have the best view of the solar eclipse.

The best time to see the meteor shower is late at night.

Wait until the sun sets and the sky is dark, around 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.

NASA says to find a dark place, lie down, and look up at the sky.

Give your eyes 30 minutes to adjust to the dark and avoid looking at your phone.

You don't need special technology to see the meteor shower, but a camera can be helpful.

The best things to have are a heating blanket and hot chocolate.
