Why Record Oil and Diesel Prices Are Triggering Protests Around the Globe

Oil prices have surged past $100 per barrel after disruptions in the Middle East, while diesel costs have risen about 60% since late February. The sharp increase follows the U.S.-Iran conflict, the Russia‑Ukraine war and repairs at key refineries.

In Syria, the government lifted gasoline prices by more than 25% and diesel by 40% on Sunday, saying the hikes reflect the global fuel‑price surge caused by the U.S.-Iran war and a coastal refinery shutdown. The increase sparked protests and left hundreds of oil‑tanker trucks stranded on the road near Tal Tamr.

Guatemala has seen a wave of unrest as transport workers, taxi drivers and Indigenous communities protest the rising cost of fuel. According to the U.S. non‑profit ACLED, by Sept. 4 there had been 40 demonstrations in 27 cities, fueled by higher fuel prices and El Niño‑related droughts.

In Bolivia, fuel shortages and climbing prices have ignited roadblocks and demonstrations this year. Labour unions, Indigenous groups and supporters of former president Evo Morales have taken to the streets to demand relief from the soaring costs.

These protests illustrate how geopolitical conflicts and technical problems in the oil sector quickly translate into everyday hardships. When crude and diesel become more expensive, transport costs rise, goods become pricier and citizens in diverse nations react with public dissent.

The pattern shows a clear chain: wars and refinery issues push oil prices up, higher fuel costs strain household budgets, and people respond with protests demanding government action.
