What Lian Yunzhi’s Rubik’s Cube Routine Teaches About Children’s Cognitive Development

Lian Yunzhi, a 6‑year‑old from Chengdu, broke the women’s 3×3 average world record twice this month. She posted averages of 4.52 seconds in Wuhan and 4.27 seconds in Guangzhou, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

Her 4.27‑second average placed her fourth worldwide among all speedcubers, behind only three Chinese record‑holders.

CCTV noted that Lian is the first female speedcuber to average under 4.5 seconds. She now knows more than 1,300 solving algorithms and practices two to three hours every day.

Her mother, Lin Yangxi, says the daily cubing sessions improve Lian’s focus, memory, logical thinking and spatial awareness, and also help her develop a healthy mindset toward winning and losing.

Lin explained that Lian first tried the cube in an extracurricular class that also offered dance and music lessons. Seeing the mental benefits, Lin shifted her daughter’s focus toward cubing as a key activity.
