Argentina's soccer teams pause for a minute of applause to honor Messi's retirement

The Argentine Football Association said on Wednesday that all soccer teams in the country will pause play for one minute at the 10‑minute mark of each match in the upcoming Clausura tournament and in other men’s and women’s leagues.

The pause is a tribute to Lionel Messi, who announced on Monday that he will retire from international duty after 21 years with the Argentina national team.

Messi is 39 years old, wore the No. 10 jersey for Argentina, and holds the national records with 207 appearances and 125 goals.

Even though he stopped playing for the national team, Messi continues his club career with Inter Miami in Major League Soccer.

The minute of applause lets the whole country honor a player who has become a symbol of Argentine football.
