Abandoned Girls’ Match Raises Questions About Gender Equality in Youth Football

On July 12 at Caloola Reserve in Oakleigh, the Boroondara Eagles Football Club said an under‑12 girls’ match was halted so an under‑11 boys’ team could use the field.

The club posted that after a 40‑minute delay the girls were moved to a water‑logged, unsafe alternative field, which forced the match to be abandoned, and it expressed deep concern for the impact on its players, families and coaches.

Monash City Villareal, the opposing club, rejected any gender‑bias allegation, describing the incident as an “organisational failure” caused by a water‑logged pitch and saying the fixture should have been called off from the start, not that any team was displaced because of gender.

Boroondara Eagles have asked Football Victoria and the City of Monash to investigate whether the incident constitutes gender discrimination. Football Victoria said it acknowledges the concerns, will handle the case through its formal Member Protection process, and is reviewing expectations for match‑day decisions, pitch use and communication.

Robert Stock, a father watching his daughter play, called the situation “disappointing” and wondered whether an 11‑year‑old needs to learn about gender discrimination now, adding that he could not imagine a boys’ team being asked to leave for a girls’ side.

The City of Monash said it strongly supports women’s and girls’ sport and has sought an explanation from Football Victoria. Both clubs say they remain committed to respectful participation and to improving communication for future fixtures.
