Crown Drops Fraud and Theft Charges Against Former Cricket Canada CEO Salman Khan

Salman Khan, the former CEO of Cricket Canada, had been charged with fraud and theft over $5,000. The charges were linked to an alleged $200,000 misappropriation from the Calgary and District Cricket League that allegedly occurred between 2014 and 2016.

The trial was scheduled to begin on a Monday, but prosecutor Petter Hurich appeared in the Calgary courtroom and withdrew the charges on that first day, ending the legal proceedings before any evidence was presented to a jury.

In a statement to CBC News, the Crown prosecution explained that they have an ongoing duty to review all available admissible evidence. After that review, they concluded there was insufficient evidence to proceed to trial.

This decision highlights a core principle of the justice system: prosecutors must be satisfied that the evidence they plan to use meets the legal standard for a criminal case. If the admissible evidence does not reach that threshold, the Crown can and must drop the charges.

The withdrawal shows that even serious allegations can be dismissed when the evidence does not support a conviction, reminding the public that the legal process relies on solid, admissible proof.
