PEI oyster farms collapse: disease endangers the island’s economy, culture and independent aquaculture

In 2024 and 2025, scientists found two oyster parasites – MSX and dermo – in PEI waters. The parasites are harmless to people but lethal to oysters, with many growers seeing 90‑95% loss and some reporting 100% mortality.

Farmers have hauled millions of dead oysters from the water, and one grower said he threw away $100,000 worth of dead shellfish in a single day, a stark sign of the financial hit the disease has caused.

Both provincial and federal governments have announced support programmes. They include direct financial relief, mental‑health services, and approval to import disease‑resistant oyster seed, a solution that will need at least three years to mature.

Without ongoing aid, many oyster growers fear they will have to sell their farms to large corporations. The loss of independent farms could reshape the industry and reduce local control over the resource.

Kaila and Bruce Richard, who borrowed heavily to modernise their Dock River farm, now risk losing everything. Bruce has taken lobster‑boat work to survive, while both say the outbreak has taken a toll on their mental health.

The collapse matters beyond economics. Oysters are part of PEI’s cultural identity and a key source of jobs. If small farms disappear, the island could lose a traditional way of life and become dependent on big‑company aquaculture.
