Detaining Visa Overstayers: Boosting Deterrence or Damaging Australia’s Tourist Appeal?

Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs Matt Thistlethwaite announced that tourists who remain in Australia after their visas expire will be placed in immigration detention, a move aimed at reducing the 77,000 visa overstayers recorded to date. He told News24 that the policy is intended to send a clear deterrent message.

The government unveiled the reforms on 17 September, introducing a ballot system for working‑holiday makers and tightening enforcement against overstayers. Immigration Minister Tony Burke added that the plan will open 250 detention beds and recruit 100 additional compliance officers to manage the influx of visa violators.

Australia was named the world’s second‑safest travel destination for 2026 by Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection, and Tourism Research Australia recorded about 8.8 million short‑term international visitor arrivals in 2025.

Australian Tourism Industry Council chief executive Erin McLeod warned that detaining tourists could tarnish the nation’s image. She told AFP that such a strategy ‘doesn’t do our reputation as a welcoming destination any good and can become quite damaging,’ especially since tourism is a vital part of the economy.

If the deterrent proves effective, the government hopes to curb illegal stays, but critics argue that a harsher reputation may discourage future visitors, potentially offsetting the economic benefits of a safer immigration system.
