0:00Now, originally from Hanoi's famous Xuan
0:02Ngoc Craft Village, they brought the
0:04centuries-old art of mother-of-pearl
0:07inlay down south, transforming ordinary
0:09seashells into extraordinary works of
0:12art, and keeping a priceless heritage
0:15alive. And here's their story.
0:22>> Inside the modest workspace, each
0:24seashell is carefully selected, cut,
0:28sawed, polished, and meticulously
0:30assembled into intricate decorative
0:33patterns.
0:35For Mr. Chinh and Mrs. Lee, preserving
0:38the craft means more than keeping a job.
0:42It's about preserving the memories of
0:44their hometown and the legacy of Xuan
0:46Ngoc.
0:51>> I moved here after getting married, so
0:53I've been living in Can Tho for more
0:54than 10 years. We came here because not
0:57many people were familiar with this
0:59craft. My husband and I have worked hard
1:02to keep it alive because we truly love
1:04what we do. It has become both our
1:06livelihood and our lifelong passion.
1:12>> Starting with a rough, lifeless seashell
1:14like this, it takes dozens of meticulous
1:17steps like cutting, carving, and
1:19polishing to get to this.
1:22And what I have in my hand is the final
1:25brilliant piece of mother-of-pearl
1:27shining in green color.
1:30The beauty of each finished piece lies
1:33not only in the natural iridescence of
1:35mother-of-pearl, but also in the
1:38artisans' passions and precision. Nearly
1:41every detail is crafted entirely by
1:44hand. A single misplayed cut or a brief
1:46lapse in concentration can render the
1:49delicate shell unusable.
1:52>> The most difficult stage of
1:54mother-of-pearl inlay is shaping the
1:56design. It requires a great precision to
1:59create patterns like these.
2:02>> Their journey of bringing this
2:03traditional craft from northern to
2:06southern Vietnam has helped preserve a
2:09cultural heritage passed down through
2:11generations.
2:13Thanks to their perseverance and
2:15unwavering passions, the craft continues
2:18to thrive despite the rapid change of
2:21modern life.
2:23>> I hope more young people will discover
2:25this craft, learn it, and continue
2:27preserving it. That is my greatest wish.
2:32>> At a time when machines [music]
2:34are gradually replacing human labors,
2:37there are still dedicated [music] hands
2:39that remain committed to traditional
2:41craftsmanship through passions,
2:44perseverance, [music] and a deep sense
2:46of responsibility for preserving their
2:49heritage.
2:50>> [music]
2:50>> The shimmering pieces of mother-of-pearl
2:53adorning today's lacquer work are more
2:56than the natural colors of seashells.
2:58[music]
2:59They are a reflections of resilient and
3:02a shared determinations to keep a
3:04treasured Vietnamese tradition alive in
3:08the southern region
3:09>> [music]
3:09>> of the country.
