0:00In Pompeii, you can time travel.
0:03So let’s go back to that day in A.D. 79.
0:08Action!
0:11This show is the story
0:12of the last 24 hours of the Roman city.
0:15This project is led by Tom Hiddleston,
0:18who is digging into the past to find remarkable stories.
0:22Is there another way of looking at all this evidence?
0:24Is there another way of seeing the past?
0:28The project's genesis was very much from Tom's love
0:31of classical past, combined with love of storytelling.
0:34I'm going to try and trace three real Romans
0:37through this disaster.
0:39We are using two forms of filmmaking to tell one story.
0:43Documentary.
0:44There seems to have been some sort of attempt of an evacuation.
0:48Something did happen on this beach.
0:50And drama to bring those experiences to life.
0:53This isn’t just an earthquake, is it?
0:55No.
0:57This is something else.
0:59Camera set.
0:59Background action!
1:01To do this ambitious project
1:03of bringing these people back, bringing their world back,
1:06we didn't want to be in a studio.
1:07We're in Malta because we had to rebuild Pompeii.
1:10The crews that we're working with are amazing,
1:13We have multiple builds, multiple streets
1:16that have to withstand flooding it
1:18with ash and volcanic bombs and explosions.
1:23The street set that’s behind is literally millimeter accurate.
1:26Action!
1:28And then to put performers, and then to put the practical
1:31effects into it,
1:31then these people really come back to life.
1:34Inside, everyone!
1:35Were doing it for real.
1:37So all the pumice and the ash and the dust.
1:40Jumping over a statue whilst also having an air cannon
1:43blasting in your ears,
1:44that's quite fun.
1:45Avi! You okay?
1:47And it’s so much easier to get lost in it
1:50because it feels so real.
1:52What we've created is really special,
1:54and a rare glimpse into what happened.
1:57And get a bit of drama and storytelling too.
2:00You find her.
2:01Find us.
2:02Go!
2:06Here we are, two thousand years later,
2:10telling their story.
2:12I mean, it's as if his hand was holding it moments ago.
2:16We can shrink that gap of two thousand years
2:18and make people go, oh,
2:19this is what I would feel if I was going through
2:22a disaster like this.
2:23At its core,
2:24what we're trying to do is tell a story of tragedy,
2:27but a tragedy with hope.
2:29Avi!
2:31Showcasing to audiences a side of this story
2:34that they have never known to even expect.
2:37They rescue one another.
2:38Yes.
2:39Everybody’s getting to safety!
2:41Come on!
2:42By combining history and story,
2:45I found a fuller truth.
2:47I know I found the people of Pompeii.
