0:02Minnesota is redesigning her flag.
0:04The current colors provocatively called,
0:06quote, “worst in the union,”
0:09Minnesota asked for submissions,
0:11out of which selected six,
0:13then thinned to three.
0:15to be picked as new before end of the year.
0:17Which of the three will it be?
0:19Doubtless many Minnesotans
0:21will want to weigh in,
0:23because breaking flag news is rare and exciting.
0:27So exciting that this is my SECOND
0:29Minnesota flag redesign video.
0:30The first with my first impressions of the
0:34I gave semiserious names.
0:35I'm sticking with for cinematic continuity.
0:37But enough with the intro.
0:40with designs, as described by their documents,
0:42for you to decide upon.
0:45So Minnesota is the North Star state.
0:47Thanks to the angle inlet that
0:50US/Canadian map making muddied up
0:51that inched Minnesota out over the 49th parallel,
0:54putting her as America's northernmost
contiguous state.
0:57Thus Star Rise centers the North Star
0:59here, with eight points,
1:00to distinguish it from the standard state stars.
1:03The blue is the sky that gives colors to
1:05Minnesota's 10,000 lakes,
1:06with a rolling green landscape
1:08for the forests and farms,
1:09and a bit of snow up top because,
1:14Here again is a North Star,
1:16this time distinct as four points in yellow.
1:18And on the upper fly is described as,
1:21wisps of snow, clouds, and aurora,
1:23that are reflected along
1:24the bottom half as the head
of the Mississippi River.
1:27You might see a loon,
1:28the common loon is the state bird,
1:29you might not, but it's there.
1:32Last up Polaris Tricolor.
1:34Starting with a hoist design in the
1:35simplified shape of Minnesota herself.
1:38An eight pointed star is centered
1:39inside with more of a twinkle look.
1:41And from that feature,
1:42tricolors extend for the lake's land and snow.
1:45These are the final three.
1:47And if you haven't ranked them yourself already,
1:49pause here to give it a
ponder 'cause I've got thoughts,
1:52I'm about to share in 3...2...1.
1:59It's easily the awfulest.
2:01In my first impressions video,
2:03did not like this design,
2:04and given time to reflect upon it has
2:07but changed my position to
2:11And learning the details of the
design didn't help either.
2:13Snow, clouds, and the aurora borealis
2:16are very different things and
2:19this squiggle looks like none of them.
2:21It's reflection I can see as a river
2:24if I try and it may be inspired by the loon.
2:28But to me, it looks like a duck.
2:30And a duck-side-down-duck.
2:31In fact, I think this design really represents
2:34the potential danger in flag redesigns.
2:36Maybe it can serve as warning to any
2:39states who might want to go next.
2:41Because when you ask for designs of a state,
2:43you'll get designs that
2:44stick all the stuff of the state on the flag,
2:51But the goal of a flag is
not to use pre-existing symbols,
2:55but to become a symbol
2:57of its city, or state, or state state.
3:01Well, there's a perfect place for it in,
3:04Which we don't have time to get into.
3:05But Minnesota also just redesigned hers into
3:09Best seal in the Union?
3:11Uhh, I don't actually know
3:12because I haven't gone through all of them.
3:14Oh, they're so interesting.
3:17Don't get distracted.
3:19You have yet to give your hottest of takes,
3:21which, before I say
the sentence that will doubtless
3:25This video had to be written,
3:30And reserve the right to retract.
3:32But, I actually think I might prefer
3:35Minnesota's original flag over Old Wavy.
3:42Literally worst in the union,
3:44but there's kind of an achievement in that.
3:46At least it's outstanding.
3:48Aren't the real worst
things those in the middle of bad,
3:52where there isn't even any fun to be had
3:55in the art of entertaining complaining.
3:59Bad but middle mediocre,
4:01which is worse than being the worst.
4:04Ah, yeah. So anyway, in case you couldn't tell,
4:06I really don't like this design,
4:08and its alternative options are even uglier.
4:12So let's just move on to,
4:16Uh, I don't have a lot to say about this one
4:20but maybe not amazing.
4:21If Old Wavy is mediocre bad,
4:23then this one is mediocre good.
4:25Now, that's a bit too harsh.
4:27Really my main complaint
is that it's so good at evoking
4:30the idea of a landscape that it looks kind of
4:33odd when hung vertical.
4:34North Star to side star?
4:36There are alternative options that
move the star but still.
4:40But I'd rate any of these as a
legit improvement over the original flag
4:44and would probably put
Minnesota somewhere in the region of
4:47Miss Mississippi's recent redesign.
4:54Which, come on girl, contest over, right?
5:00That Minnesota K is so kool,
5:02subtly representing the Great State.
5:05It's a unique design element,
5:06not just among state flags but world flags.
5:09I kind of can't believe no tricolor hoist
5:12has inverted a triangle before because
5:14it looks so truly traditional.
5:16Something that could have been designed
5:17at any time in the long past.
5:19Thus basically guaranteeing
it'll look great into the long future,
5:25which despite my nickname,
5:26looks painfully modern,
5:28and is destined to be dated in under a decade.
5:30Polaris Tricolor looks like a flag.
5:33Especially when you rotate it with
5:34North Star, top star,
5:35and still stands out even without wind.
5:38Now, the only thing I'm
afraid of for perfect Polaris is
5:42there are a bunch of variants,
5:46from the original design.
5:48Look, I get the desire
to tinker at the last second.
5:51When this first caught my eye,
5:52I did wonder about the slightly muted colors
5:55and had second thoughts
5:57about the white stripe up top.
6:00my love, for this design has only grown with time.
6:04White stripe on top makes it distinct
6:06from some of the most well known tricolors.
6:08And the slightly muted colors convey a
6:11northern kind of cold coziness and
6:13look better together than brightening the blue.
6:16I mean, look, the design is so strong,
6:18it would survive small changes,
6:20but they'd hurt my heart a bit.
6:22Thus, the original Tricolor Polaris design,
6:25as the artist intended,
6:27gets my unambiguous approval
6:30and I hope to soon see it flying over the
6:32Land of 10,000 Lakes.
6:34But, I'm not a Minnesotan.
6:36It's not my opinion that matters.
6:37I'm just here because I can't stop myself from
6:40being on the edge of my seat to see what
6:42Minnesota selects for herself.
6:45Please pick Polaris Tricolor though.
