The proposal would move referees from contracts with Football Australia to direct contracts with the A‑League itself, shifting payment responsibility to the league.

The Professional Football Referees Association (PFRA) argues the plan creates a conflict of interest, saying “Such an arrangement would place referees in an unacceptable position of potential conflict and raise serious concerns regarding the integrity and impartiality of the refereeing program.” The PFRA added that referees “cannot grow without trust or succeed without independence.”

Football Australia counters that the change complies with FIFA regulations and does not threaten the integrity of the competition.

Because of the stalemate, A‑League Men and Women matches are now at risk of cancellation, while the Australia Cup and the second‑tier Australian Championship, both run by Football Australia, are still scheduled to go ahead.
