Business park planned on former Nazi camp site

People in Austria are angry about a new building plan. Workers are constructing a large shop and market on a historic site. A Nazi concentration camp was located there many years ago.

During World War II, the Nazis held about four hundred women in this camp. The women were forced to work there. Activists and historians want to protect the site so the history is not forgotten. They argue that shops should not be built on places where people suffered.

The company says it will create a memorial for the women. Many people think building shops on the site is wrong. They say we must remember the past and learn from it.

Difficult words: concentration camp – a place where many people were forced to live and work, often dying; historian – a person who studies and writes about the past; suffer – to experience pain or great hardship.
