What Charles Goodhart’s Warning Teaches Us About the Coming Economic Challenges

Charles Goodhart, emeritus professor at the London School of Economics and former senior Bank of England official, warned that “the next 30 to 40 years are going to be very difficult.” He shared these views on the Peter McCormack podcast in July.

Goodhart said the period of strong growth and high living standards between 1950 and 2020 was a temporary blessing that cannot be restored simply by voting for different politicians.

He pointed to several forces that will shape the coming decades: supply disruptions caused by the US‑Iran war, massive AI spending by large tech companies, persistent housing‑affordability problems, and an ageing population.

According to Goodhart, the easy monetary policy of the 1990s pushed down interest rates, which lifted asset prices and now makes housing less affordable for many households.

He argued that tax systems need a major overhaul, shifting the focus from taxing income and profits to taxing assets such as land and property, to reflect the new economic reality.

These factors – political polarisation, demographic change, rapid AI investment and a tax structure that no longer matches asset growth – combine to make the next three to four decades especially challenging for workers and policymakers.

The key lesson is that past prosperity was a product of unique, temporary conditions; without adapting policy to today’s realities, future growth will be far harder to achieve.
