He asked for glasses that could block the glare without distorting the pilots' vision.

By 1936, the company made a prototype with green-tinted lenses in a lightweight frame, called the 'Anti-Glare' model.

A year later, the company changed the design to a metal frame and named it 'Ray-Ban'.

The name 'Ray-Ban' is simple - it means to block the sun's rays from the eyes.

The Aviator's lens shape was made to follow the pilots' gaze when they look at their instruments.
