0:00Spider-Man: Brand New Day is
0:02action-packed, emotionally satisfying,
0:04and riddled with questions that don't
0:06have any easy answers. Let's try to
0:08unravel some of the movies more tangled
0:10webs. [music] Spoilers start now. Brand
0:14New Day is built on the whole idea of
0:15the world, forgetting who Peter Parker
0:17is in No Way [music] Home. He's
0:19completely on his own with no friends,
0:21no Aunt May, and no one at Stark
0:24Industries who could help him out. But
0:26despite all that, he doesn't seem to
0:28have a problem with [music] getting
0:30money. His apartment's a piece of crap,
0:32sure, so he probably [music] has cheap
0:34rent, but it's rent all the same. How
0:37was he affording this place, plus food,
0:39plus all of the supplies he needs to
0:41maintain his Spidey suit and [music] all
0:43of his other gadgets? He has a 3D
0:45printer by his desk that's seemingly
0:47working non-stop. And those things don't
0:50run [music] cheap. He's paying his phone
0:52bill, and those things don't run cheap.
0:55Does he even have a job?
0:56>> He's been dedicating 100% of his life to
0:59cleaning up the streets of New York.
1:01>> Yeah, guess not. Maybe Aunt May left him
1:04an inheritance, even though we're not
1:06sure how Peter could collect any money
1:08after the world forgets about him. Tony
1:10Stark could have made sure he was taken
1:12care of, too. But nothing like that has
1:14ever been confirmed. To be fair, Peter
1:17Barker has always been portrayed as poor
1:19working class, but still able to fix his
1:22suit and build gadgets with ease. But
1:25Brand New Day adds an extra confusing
1:27layer with the fact that there's no
1:28record [music] of Peter Parker in this
1:30new status quo. How can he get anything
1:33done when he's a literal nobody?
1:36There's a throwaway line in Brand New
1:38Day that has some major implications
1:40that [music] get completely tossed
1:41aside. After Gan Gray infiltrates one of
1:44damage controls buildings, she's able to
1:46abscond with Scorpion. Spidey and his
1:49NYPD liaison, Gene DeWolf, figure that
1:52Scorpion [music] will factor into the
1:53next phase of her plan. So, Peter
1:56informs Gene that he'll hack into all
1:57the security cameras around New York to
2:00search for [music] Scorpion's face. That
2:02way, they'll know immediately when he
2:03surfaces. Gene tells Peter that hacking
2:06into security [music] cameras is
2:07illegal, but she doesn't do anything
2:09about it, and Peter doesn't have any
2:11moral quandries over invading privacy
2:13for the sake of capturing one villain.
2:16The thing is that Gene and us as the
2:18audience know that Spider-Man is a
2:20[music] good guy. We know he's not going
2:21to infringe on New Yorker's civil
2:23liberties. But it's still a massive
2:25invasion of privacy that no one seems
2:28all that concerned about. After all, if
2:30broke old pizza can hack [music] into
2:32every camera, what's stopping someone
2:34more nefarious from doing the same
2:36thing? What would stop him from abusing
2:38that power in the name of good? Probably
2:40nothing. But NYPD's finest don't seem
2:44particularly worried, [music] and
2:45neither does the movie. It's not like
2:47this is the Dark Knight.
2:49Forget superpowered villains. One of the
2:51greatest antagonistic forces in the MCU
2:54is a government agency. The Department
2:57of Damage Control has done a lot of
2:59shady things over the years. Their
3:01agents raided a high school in an
3:03attempt to [music] bring in some
3:04teenagers in Mis Marvel. And in
3:06Wonderman, it's revealed that damage
3:08control has prisoner quotas in order to
3:10justify its exorbitant budget. [music]
3:13And the department is indirectly
3:14responsible for creating the villain
3:16vulture after they superseded his
3:19contracts to clean up the mess after the
3:21battle of New York, sending him down a
3:23path of villain.
3:24>> If you have a grievance, you may take it
3:26up with my superiors.
3:28>> Your superiors? Who the hell are they?
3:30>> Damage control is ineffective [music] at
3:32best, at curtailing superpowered
3:34threats. At worst, they just make
3:36situations worse. So, you really have to
3:38wonder how the government is still
3:40allowing them [music] to operate without
3:41much oversight. Even if you're willing
3:43to overlook that because let's face it,
3:46governments do shady things all the
3:47time, there's still the matter of why
3:49Peter would willingly work for them. In
3:51case you forgot, Damage Control tried to
3:53arrest Peter after his secret identity
3:55was revealed to the world. Surely, their
3:57other exploits, like targeting a high
3:59schooler who wasn't hurting anyone,
4:01would [music] be public knowledge. Peter
4:03may want to protect damage control from
4:05Gan Gray because it's the right thing to
4:07do. But it's odd he gets super chummy
4:09with director Bill Meza. He should at
4:11least be a little suspicious. It doesn't
4:14take long for Gan Gray to figure out
4:16Spider-Man's secret identity and learn
4:18his connection to MJ, even if she
4:21doesn't remember him. Jean's MTU powers,
4:24at least at first, involve the ability
4:26to telepathically [music] control
4:28people, and she can avoid detection by
4:30leaping to different people in quick
4:32succession. His analytics determine that
4:34Gene [music] can only telepathically hop
4:3633 ft from one person to the next. So,
4:39when he traps her in a helicopter, he
4:41figures she's too high up to get into
4:42[music] anyone new. Peter goes to MJ and
4:45assumes everything will be all right. He
4:47even momentarily [music] assumes she
4:49remembers who he is after seeing his
4:50face. But then he realizes that MJ was
4:53[music] really Gene all along. She had
4:55somehow gotten to MJ first and was just
4:58pretending to be her. But how exactly
5:00did she get to MJ's apartment first?
5:02Later, Peter sees [music] Gene getting
5:04driven around by someone under her
5:06mind's control. So, it's clear she's not
5:08just tucked away in a hideout somewhere.
5:10Perhaps after Peter webbed up the
5:12helicopter, she got driven closer to
5:14MJ's apartment. But [music] Peter made
5:16such a big deal out of the 33 ft rule
5:19that it feels like a bit of a copout to
5:21just say that Jean somehow beat him to
5:23MJ when she should have been stuck. The
5:26Hulk fight is an indisputable high point
5:28in Brand New Day, but the way it ends
5:30doesn't make a lot of sense. Once
5:32Bruce's inhibitor is broken, he
5:34completely loses control and morphs into
5:37Savage Hulk. Even though he's not under
5:39Jean's control any longer, he's still
5:41really angry. No better for me, Hulk.
5:47>> And then something strange happens.
5:49Peter reveals to Hulk that he was the
5:51student getting information from Bruce
5:53back at the college. Something clicks
5:55inside Hulk and he seems to recognize
5:58that Peter has good intentions. So Hulk
6:00willingly lets go of the building and
6:02crashes into the street below. It's a
6:05nice moment, but how is Peter of all
6:07people able to break through to the
6:09Hulk? It took a significant connection
6:11in the past to do that. [music]
6:13In fact, only Black Widow's bond seemed
6:15to ever be strong enough. Even Thor
6:17couldn't manage it, and they were
6:19friends from work. I won't hurt you
6:21anymore. No one will,
6:28but Bruce barely knows Peter. Eh, it's
6:31all a bit too tidy. The final scene of
6:33Spider-Man: Brand New Day sees Peter
6:35running into Ned. The two previously
6:38hung out at Ned's [music] apartment, but
6:39that was while Peter was wearing
6:41Spider-Man's mask. Peter approaches Ned
6:43and introduces himself, and he leans in
6:45to do the duo's signature handshake. The
6:48amazing part is that Ned knows exactly
6:50what to do for the handshake, [music]
6:52and it ends with Ned looking up at Peter
6:54like he remembers who he was. It's a
6:56moment of hope because it shows that
6:58Peter can unlock old memories inside his
7:00friends in spite of Doctor Strange
7:02spell. But that directly goes against
7:04what was established [music] previously
7:05when Gan Gray was in control of MJ's
7:08mind. She mentions how she looked all
7:10through her memories and there was zero
7:12trace of Peter. Even after reading
7:14Peter's letter, MJ confirms [music] that
7:16she has no memory of him. So, what does
7:19Peter have to do to make MJ get that
7:21same Peter tingle? [music] We'll have to
7:23wait until Spider-Man 5 to see what that
7:25could be. Here's a fun and answered
7:28question for a different movie posed
7:30within this movie. When Peter pays a
7:32visit to Bruce Banner, he's giving a
7:34lecture and one student [music] asks him
7:35something that's been on the minds of
7:37MCU fans off and on for about 80 years.
7:40If Thanos was so worried about
7:42overpopulation, [music]
7:43why didn't he use a gauntlet to just
7:46double the universe's resources instead
7:48of wiping out half of all life? He could
7:51just snap his fingers and make enough
7:52spaghetti for everyone, and there'll be
7:54no more suffering. Instead, for some
7:57reason, he's fully logged into the idea
7:59of balancing the universe through pain
8:01and loss.
8:02>> It's a paradise
8:05[music]
8:06>> because you murdered half the planet.
8:08>> Bruce doesn't have the answer to the
8:10student's question because the only real
8:12answer is that Thanos was insane.
8:15[music] They didn't call him the mad
8:16titan because he was so good at giving
8:18hugs. That and he wouldn't be much of a
8:21villain if he just tried to feed
8:22everyone, would he?
8:23>> I suggest you don't worry about this
8:25sort of thing. and just enjoy yourself.
8:28That goes for you all, too.
8:30>> Yes.
8:32>> To the untrained eye, Spider-Man: Brand
8:34New Day's postredit scene may not seem
8:36like much, but for those that know, it
8:39might just reveal where the MCU [music]
8:40story is heading after Avengers
8:42Doomsday. In all fairness, calling the
8:44next Avengers movie after that Secret
8:47Wars does that, [music] too. Brand New
8:49Day introduces Ned's Spidey Tracker app,
8:51which keeps tabs on Spider-Man's
8:53sightings throughout New York and the
8:55world at large. By the postredit scene,
8:58it seems to have gotten an upgrade. It
9:00not only follows Spider-Man out of New
9:02York, but way beyond that into deep
9:04space. The screen then goes black and
9:06we're told Spider-Man will return,
9:09though not which movie where that will
9:10happen. We don't know the exact details,
9:12but all signs point to the plot of
9:14Doomsday involving incursions, the
9:16phenomenon of universes colliding into
9:19one another, leading to their
9:20destruction. In the comics, incursions
9:22destroy the Marvel universe, leading to
9:252015's Secret Wars, in which Dr. Doom
9:28constructs his own world, Battle [music]
9:30World, from the remnants of various
9:32realities. In that story, Battle World
9:34is a whole different universe. In the
9:37original Secret Wars from 1984, the
9:40battle world is in deep space. In both
9:42stories, all the toys in the Marvel toy
9:44box get smashed together in [music]
9:46fights. This is all to say that Secret
9:48Wars could easily include Spider-Man,
9:51even if he doesn't make a surprise
9:52appearance in Doomsday, [music]
9:54and maybe the app is showing him on
9:56Battle World. Over the past several
9:59years, Marvel has been slowly but surely
10:01rolling out the mutant [music] concept.
10:03In alternate universe, Professor X was
10:05in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of
10:07Madness. Beasts showed up at the end of
10:09the Marvels. [music]
10:10And of course, all those mutants from
10:12other universes in Deadpool and
10:13Wolverine. Camala Khan is technically a
10:16mutant, too. Sades thinks Gan Gray is
10:19something different, though. She's
10:21really kicking open the door to the MCU,
10:23having its own distinct set of X-Men.
10:25But that raises the question, where are
10:27the rest of them? The most likely
10:30explanation is that the other mutants
10:31are simply in hiding.
10:33>> They can't just dust off one of the
10:34famous X-Men. How about that pots with
10:36the giant pigeon wings?
10:37>> A new version of Charles Xavier could
10:39already [music] have a school in the
10:40MCU, but he's just keeping it under the
10:43radar. Still, it's a bit odd that no
10:45other mutants have made their presence
10:47[music] known. Gan Gray freezes a whole
10:49bunch of New Yorkers once their
10:51telepathic abilities strengthen. That's
10:53sure to get some attention. We can't
10:55help but wonder if there are similar
10:57stories of, say, a young boy destroying
10:59his school with blasts from his eyes.
11:02It's pretty much confirmed that the MCU
11:04will undergo a soft reboot of sorts
11:06following Avengers Secret [music] Wars.
11:08It's likely that reality shifts will
11:10result in some recasting and reworking,
11:12[music] like maybe bringing the
11:14Fantastic 4 into the main 616 universe.
11:17This reset is also sure to introduce new
11:20mutants who weren't there before, giving
11:21Gan Gray some friends to hang out with
11:23at Xavier's school.
