A Canadian drilling firm got $4 million from a US oil company to prepare a rig for Arctic drilling. The rig is still in Canada and won't move until the US company gets permission from Greenland's government.

Alberta-based Stampede Drilling shared this after a dispute between a US oil company and Greenland's government. The US company moved drilling equipment to Greenland without permission.

Stampede Drilling said it prepared its rig in Canada for Arctic operations if the project gets approved.

Greenland Energy Company gave $4 million to Stampede Drilling for rig upgrades. The rig is still in Canada.

The rig has not been moved to or used in Greenland. No drilling has happened there.

After US President Donald Trump talked about taking over Greenland, the island is pushing back against a US oil company setting up drilling equipment without permission.

The US oil company, Greenland Energy, was preparing to drill for oil in Greenland. It moved equipment to the island's east coast, which made Greenland warn them in July.

In May, Greenland Energy signed an agreement with Stampede Drilling to use a high-performance rig in Greenland's Jameson Land Basin.

The Jameson Land Basin is a big area in eastern Greenland with a lot of oil. Greenland Energy wants to explore it.

On July 30, Greenland's government found out that a British company had moved drilling gear to Greenland's east coast. This British company is connected to Greenland Energy.

Greenland said the drilling plans are not allowed and the US company doesn't have the right permits. A permit given to a British firm is no longer valid.

Greenland warned the company to follow its rules and get approval before doing anything.

Greenland Energy said it will follow Greenland's rules.

The company's CEO said they will work with Greenland's government and follow its rules.

The company expects to get a permit by winter 2027.

But the company couldn't wait for the whole process to start getting ready.

Waiting for permits would delay operations and waste time in Greenland's short working season.

Stampede Drilling's approach hasn't changed. It won't deploy its rig or drill in Greenland without all necessary approvals.

Stampede Drilling didn't send any equipment to Greenland and wasn't involved in moving the equipment there.

A British newspaper reported that Greenland Energy has ties to the Trump White House.

In January, Trump said he wanted to buy Greenland, calling it 'our territory'.
