I'm hearing about the global housing crisis. Is Australia's crisis unique?

- Amy R

Gerard Burg from Cotality answered Amy R's question:

Other countries have similar housing challenges.

I don't know the exact reasons for these challenges, but it shows we're not alone.

Australia's housing affordability problem is about demand outpacing supply.

It's a complex issue, with many factors like materials, labor, and regulations.

Taxes like stamp duty can limit the efficient use of existing homes.

The problem can't be simplified; it needs coordinated government actions.

Many people have shared how the tight property market affects them.

Pricedout: High rents stopped me from saving for a home deposit.

Anna: We moved to a cheaper area to save for a home, but now we can't afford to build near the city.

Michael: I'm 40, separated, and can't afford to get back into the market, despite earning above average.

The federal government's 5% Deposit Scheme helps first home buyers.

The government guarantees 15% of the loan, and lenders' mortgage insurance is waived.

Jordan Fernance and his wife used the scheme to get into the market faster.

Jordan credits the scheme for helping them buy a home sooner.

They earn good money, but saving for a home was hard due to rising prices.

The couple chose a 5% deposit to get into the market sooner, despite potential higher interest.

Jordan feels secure owning his home, despite the bank owning it.

No one can sell the home or tell them to move; they have control.

Owning a home gives Jordan a sense of security and satisfaction.
