Moon Phase Today: August 7
On August 7, the Moon is in the Waning Crescent phase. We can see 37% of it.
We can still see some parts of the Moon. We can see the Aristarchus Plateau and the Copernicus Crater. With binoculars, we can see more. With a telescope, we can see even more.
The next Full Moon is on August 28.
The Moon changes as it goes around the Earth. It takes about 29.5 days to complete one cycle. The Sun, Earth, and Moon move, so we see different parts of the Moon.
There are eight Moon phases.
New Moon: The Moon is between the Earth and the Sun. We can't see it.
Waxing Crescent: A small part of the Moon is lit on the right side.
First Quarter: Half of the Moon is lit on the right side. It looks like a half-Moon.
Waxing Gibbous: More than half of the Moon is lit, but not all of it.
Full Moon: The whole Moon is lit and we can see it.
Waning Gibbous: The Moon is losing light on the right side.
Third Quarter: Half of the Moon is lit, but on the left side.
Waning Crescent: A small part of the Moon is lit on the left side before it goes dark.
