Why Inuit Collaboration Is Key to North of North Season 2’s Authenticity and Success

North of North, a comedy‑drama set in the fictional Ice Cove, is a co‑production of APTN, CBC and Netflix. Its first season became a global hit, breaking into Netflix’s Top 10 in 33 countries and collecting nine Canadian Screen Awards, including Best Comedy Series.

The show’s creators repeatedly stress that the involvement of Inuit actors, crew members and designers is the cornerstone of its authenticity. Co‑creator and executive producer Stacey Aglok MacDonald says the series would not feel “as authentic and real as possible” without the community’s constant input.

One of the most visible signs of this partnership is the wardrobe. Every coat, parka and accessory is handcrafted by Inuit artists, which means traditional measuring tools are often replaced by eye‑based or hand‑based techniques. In some cases a dedicated person had to physically carry a custom‑made parka from one remote community to another.

When the costumes arrived incomplete or required special details—such as a “sunburst” fur ruff around the face—the production team turned to the local experts for guidance. This rapid, community‑driven problem‑solving kept the visual style true to the diverse Inuit traditions across the Arctic.

Season 2 returns to the screen on Sept 1 in Canada on APTN+, and a week later on CBC TV, CBC Gem and APTN TV, with a worldwide Netflix rollout later this fall. The deep collaboration that shaped the first season’s realism is expected to give the new episodes the same cultural credibility and audience appeal.
