AI Helps Homework but Hurts Exams – What the Chinese Study Teaches Us About Deep Thinking

Researchers published this year examined more than 26,000 students in China, from grade 7 to grade 12, to see how generative AI affected everyday school work and formal testing.

The data revealed that when students used AI tools, their homework scores rose by 18 % and they finished assignments 30 % faster than peers who did not use the technology.

However, the same group experienced a sharp decline in monthly exam performance, with scores dropping about 20 % after just six months of regular AI assistance.

Neuroscientist Professor James Vickers warns that relying on AI for the hard mental work can weaken deep‑thinking skills, which may in turn damage brain plasticity and reduce what experts call cognitive reserve.

Brain plasticity is the brain’s ability to form new neural connections through learning. These connections help the brain resist damage from injury, stroke, multiple sclerosis and even dementia. Cognitive reserve builds up from early schooling and supports this resilience.

A recent eSafety Commission report found that 78 % of Australian children have already used an AI assistant, showing how quickly the technology has entered young learners’ lives.

The study suggests we should treat AI as a supplement, not a substitute, for the mental effort that builds lasting neural pathways. Balancing convenience with deep, effortful thinking may protect both short‑term performance and long‑term brain health.
