Canada’s Ebola Travel Ban Extension Puts Tens of Thousands of Applicants in Limbo

The Public Health Agency of Canada announced on Friday that the entry ban for citizens of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda and South Sudan will be extended for another 30 days, now running until September 28.

As of August 12, immigration officials reported that the extension has frozen 31,693 permanent‑residency and 10,465 temporary‑residency applications, and it also blocks anyone from those three countries who already possesses a valid Canadian visa.

In addition, Canada will continue to require a 21‑day quarantine for anyone returning from the DRC, Uganda or South Sudan, a rule that aid agencies say limits the ability to send humanitarian workers to the region.

The government argues that the risk of Ebola entering Canada remains low and that the measures are purely precautionary, while some public‑health experts claim the decision contradicts World Health Organization guidance.

For the affected applicants and travelers, the extended ban means delayed processing of residency status, postponed travel plans, and added uncertainty about when they can finally move to Canada.
