Why Edmonton Needs a Professional Women’s Soccer Team

Marni Devlin Moses is a high‑level youth soccer coach in Edmonton. She wants a professional women’s soccer team in the city so her players can keep playing after university.

The Northern Super League (NSL) is Canada’s first professional women’s soccer league. It already has teams in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Halifax.

In August, Moses started a petition asking the NSL to add a franchise in Edmonton. The petition has already collected more than 1,200 signatures.

The NSL told CBC News that it knows about the petition. The league has not made any formal expansion decisions, but it said the community support looks promising.

Moses says that, right now, there is no professional pathway for Edmonton girls after they finish university. She believes a local team would let them continue their soccer careers and inspire younger players.

Moses also says that a professional team could bring business, create jobs, and help build a women’s soccer stadium in Edmonton.

She notes that Edmonton has a large soccer community, with many girls playing and fans attending big matches, showing strong interest in the sport.

Without a professional women’s team, young female athletes have limited options, and the city misses possible economic and cultural benefits.
