How Uber’s Live‑Video Feature for Teen Accounts Works

Uber has introduced a live‑video option for its Uber Teen Accounts. When the driver enables the feature, the front‑facing camera on the driver’s smartphone streams a live view of the inside of the car to a parent or guardian who is linked to the teen’s account.

The service is already active in nine U.S. markets and Uber plans to roll it out nationwide over the coming weeks. Availability also depends on whether the driver has the live‑video setting turned on.

When a ride begins, Uber sends a push notification to the linked parent; the parent can tap the alert to watch the live feed, and both the teen and the driver receive a notification that the livestream is active.

Uber says it cannot access the live video in real time. The video is encrypted and stored on Uber’s servers for up to 14 days, after which it is automatically deleted unless it has been shared as part of a safety report. Uber may access the decryption key only when investigating a reported safety incident.

The linked parent loses access once the ride ends, and neither the driver nor the teen can view the recording. The encrypted file remains on Uber’s servers only if it becomes part of a safety‑related report, in which case Uber follows its data‑retention policies.
