Dubai Airport lets Emiratis renew passports in just 8 minutes

On September 15, an Emirati traveler found out his passport would expire in about a month, and his destination required at least six months of validity. He went to the passport renewal desk at Dubai International Airport and got a new passport in eight minutes.

The passport renewal desk is in the arrivals area of Terminal 3 and is only for UAE citizens.

The desk is connected to the UAE’s immigration and citizenship databases. A smart digital system checks the traveler’s details and processes the renewal. The new system cuts the processing time from roughly 35 minutes to seven minutes and reduces the steps from 20 to just one.

The fast service is only for UAE citizens. Visitors from other countries must use their own passport‑renewal procedures. The example shows how linking government data with digital tools can make public services much quicker and simpler.
