0:37TJB and YTN, four broadcasters in the

0:41Republic of Korea, have reported on a

0:44study by Ninh Pham Thanh Chung, a

0:46Vietnamese doctoral student at the Korea

0:48Advanced Institute of Science and

0:50Technology, using fallen leaves. Chung

0:52and his research team has developed a

0:54biodegradable agricultural mulch film,

0:57offering an alternative to conventional

0:59plastic mulch that can remain in the

1:01environment for hundreds of years.

1:05>> When I arrived in the Republic of Korea

1:07in autumn, I saw large amounts of fallen

1:10leaves and wondered if they could be

1:11turned into fully biodegradable

1:13agricultural mulch film. The biggest

1:16challenge was minimizing harmful

1:18chemicals. We therefore used green

1:20solvents for pre-treatment and only

1:22water to produce the film. This became a

1:24key strength of our research.

1:30>> In Singapore, Pham Ngo Minh Quang is

1:32finding ways to recycle composites,

1:35highly durable materials used in

1:37advanced industries, into valuable

1:39products for sound absorption, thermal

1:42insulation, and oil absorption. His

1:45research was published in Waste

1:46Management, a leading international

1:48journal in the field.

1:51>> I believe that if this new approach to

1:54composite recycling is developed and

1:56scaled up, it could reduce environmental

1:58risks. In Vietnam, it could also ease

2:01the economic burden of treating used

2:03solid waste materials.

2:08>> The Politburo's recently issued a

2:10resolution 23 on affairs related to

2:13overseas Vietnamese aims to develop

2:16networks in a sustainable ecosystem

2:18connecting Vietnamese experts,

2:20intellectuals and scientists worldwide.

2:22The resolution is expected to create

2:24more avenues for young Vietnamese

2:26researchers like Quang and Trung to

2:28contribute to national development in

2:30various ways, including from abroad.

2:36>> In the future, I hope to serve as the

2:38bridge between Vietnam and Singapore in

2:40solid waste management and technological

2:43development.

2:45>> I hope to become an educator and inspire

2:48future generations of young Vietnamese,

2:50especially those passionate about

2:52environmental issues.

2:56>> From fragile leaves to highly durable

2:58composites, materials once considered

3:00waste are being given a new life through

3:03Vietnamese innovation. By addressing

3:05Vietnam's needs, research from

3:07international laboratories can help

3:09tackle the global waste challenge and

3:11support the [music] country's green

3:12development.
