0:00Progressive Abdul Elsied defeated
0:02Congresswoman Haley Stevens in a chaotic
0:04end to a race that has already been
0:06quite contentious. Now, first things
0:08first, what Elsad accomplished was
0:11historic. He's the first Muslim Democrat
0:13to be nominated for a Senate seat. And
0:16also, he defeated a challenger that was
0:18backed by a tons of members of the
0:20establishment and a ton of outside
0:22money. Plus, what Elsa's strategy was
0:25was unique. He flipped the attacks
0:28against him and ran explicitly against
0:30Democratic leadership and outside money
0:33like Apad. Here's what he told me in our
0:35interview. It might be that the question
0:37Michiganders are asking is who poses the
0:41biggest push back to a system of
0:43politics that has been bought off in
0:45ways that leave me unable to afford my
0:47groceries, un able to afford a home,
0:49unable to look at my kids' school and
0:50believe that that's a good place for
0:51them, unable to get healthcare when I
0:53need it, and then sending my money
0:55abroad telling me that somehow that's in
0:56my best interest. If we want to be the
0:58party of working people, we have to be
0:59the party for working people, which
1:01means that we've got to stop taking
1:02money from the people who are nickel and
1:03dimming them. But while Elsa's victory
1:05is a huge win for the left, there are
1:08also some warning signs in his primary
1:10win. He ran far behind some of his
1:12polling numbers and showed some
1:14weaknesses with rural voters and some
1:16black voters. He's going to have to
1:18improve on that if he wants to defeat
1:19Republican Mike Rogers in November,
1:21which is critical for the Democrats
1:23chances of controlling the House. It's
1:25going to be a different election, though
1:27come the midterms. This was a referendum
1:29on the left and what's happening among
1:31Democrats. November will be all about
1:33Trump.
