0:00Brand New Day is blowing minds all over
0:02the [music] world, but one aspect is
0:04making a decent amount of viewers shake
0:06their heads. It all has to do with a
0:08scene involving Jean Grey. At one point,
0:10we see her hopping from person to
0:12person, temporarily controlling their
0:14bodies and talking to Peter. The last
0:16unsuspecting person she lands in is an
0:18elderly gentleman who she ultimately
0:20leads into the street to get hit by a
0:22truck, seemingly to death. Yikes. Also
0:26disturbing is the fact that Peter
0:27doesn't even think to check on the guy
0:29after it happens. [music] He just goes
0:31about his Spider-Man business and that's
0:33that.
0:34>> Hey, can we do this one at a time,
0:35please?
0:36>> Now, you can chalk that one up to Peter
0:39being all out of sorts thanks to the
0:40mutating DNA thing he has going on, but
0:43even still, his lack of reaction makes
0:45the moment all the more jarring. On the
0:47topic of Jean, her appearance in Brand
0:49New Day is obviously the beginning of
0:51her arc in the ongoing MCU. One that
0:53will directly connect to the standalone
0:55X-Men film that's in the works. [music]
0:57Anyone who knows her character is well
0:59aware of the whole Dark Phoenix arc,
1:01where we see her become a pretty big
1:03problem, but this presumably won't be
1:05happening for a while and obviously
1:07involves some outside influences on her
1:08character. So, why are they already
1:11portraying her as someone who doesn't
1:12seem to care whatsoever about causing
1:14lethal amounts of collateral damage?
1:15[music]
1:17It's understandable that she's confused
1:18and enraged by the death of her sister,
1:20but that doesn't give her carte blanche
1:22to kill innocent [music] people, no?
1:23While these are all good questions, some
1:25fans have come to her defense. In one
1:28particular Reddit thread where debate on
1:29the topic's been simmering, one poster
1:31made this point. This is a Jean Grey
1:34without the guidance of Charles Xavier.
1:36Not only does she not have the pacifist
1:38morals [music] of Xavier's teachings,
1:40but she also doesn't have the full
1:41understanding and control of her
1:43abilities that his teachings provide.
1:45She's a young woman whose sister and
1:47only remaining family member has been
1:49taken from her and then she finds out
1:51she's been murdered. Regular lives don't
1:53really mean much to her at this point.
1:55Numerous others agreed with [music] one
1:57fan pointing out that unintended
1:58collateral damage is just the way things
2:00go for X-Men. Before they learn to
2:02control their powers, something as
2:04simple as raging hormones can seriously
2:06harm or even kill someone. Of course,
2:09Jean's actions in this particular scene
2:11are much more intentional, but the point
2:13is still relevant. Another Redditor
2:15noted that while the scene definitely
2:17rubbed them the wrong way at first,
2:18>> [music]
2:18>> the subtle genius of it lies in how it
2:20sets things up for future X-Men
2:22installments. They wrote in part, "Jean
2:25making moral mistakes and basically
2:26doing evil was, I see now, [music] a
2:28truly excellent way to introduce the
2:30concept of the X-Men. An omega-level
2:33mutant without a moral compass should be
2:34terrifying." They went on to say, "The
2:37MCU version will be so much better if
2:39they can really push shades of gray and
2:40humanity, rather than the normal good
2:42mutants versus bad mutants [music] that
2:44the older original X-Men comics and the
2:46movies traditionally have been." The
2:48hunger for this sort of subtlety in the
2:49X-Men realm is definitely out there. The
2:51biggest indicator in recent years is the
2:53success of 2017's Logan.
2:56>> I don't know what Charles put in your
2:58head,
2:58>> [clears throat]
2:58>> but I am not whatever it is you think I
3:00am, okay?
3:02>> Watching Logan wrestle with his demons
3:03and overall legacy before perishing for
3:05real was extremely affecting. The movie
3:08was even nominated for Best Adapted
3:10Screenplay at the 90th Academy Awards.
3:12Definitely not a typical accolade when
3:14it comes to superhero flicks. Seeing
3:16this sort of emotional depth explored
3:18through other X-Men characters is an
3:20enticing concept. [music] We just hope
3:22the creative team knew what they were
3:23doing when they made Jean make such a
3:25shocking move. [music]
