Vietnam’s Export Surge Shows the Power of Foreign‑Invested Firms and the U.S. Market

The same office reported that exports to the United States totaled $159.4 billion, accounting for about one‑third of total exports. This confirms the U.S. as Vietnam’s biggest export market.
The report showed foreign‑invested enterprises contributed more than 81 percent of total export turnover. Their overseas shipments rose 33 percent year‑on‑year, while domestic enterprises grew only 8.2 percent.
Processed industrial goods made up over 90 percent of Vietnam’s total export value, according to the office. In October, exports were $64.67 billion, up 8.7 percent month‑on‑month, and imports fell to $57.36 billion, down 1.4 percent. The monthly trade surplus therefore increased to $7.31 billion.
The National Statistics Office also noted that total import‑export turnover exceeded $1.01 trillion during the ten‑month period, the first time the $1 trillion threshold was passed. Overall, the data illustrate how foreign‑invested firms and the U.S. market are central to Vietnam’s export surge.
