Why Young Canadians Are Returning to Cineplex Theatres Amid Sale Talks
The same week the company released a memo naming Bill Walker as its new chief executive officer. The memo said Cineplex has started a strategic review that may explore “options to enhance and maximize value for all shareholders,” including the possibility of a sale.
A Telefilm Canada survey shows that 85% of respondents younger than 35 describe themselves as moviegoers, versus only 54% of those aged 35 and older.
Cineplex currently controls roughly 74% of Canada’s total box‑office revenue. Independent‑theatre operators also reported a modest year‑over‑year rise, which director Sonya Yokota William linked to “younger, Gen‑Z audiences that are more curious and more adventurous and happy to go out and see something they might not have before.”
The data suggest that, despite streaming options, a large share of young Canadians still prefers the communal experience of a theatre. If a sale proceeds, industry observers note that any change in ownership could influence how that experience is delivered across the country.
