Why the Switch to Sebastian Maniscalco’s SiriusXM Channel Threatens Working‑Class Comedians

SiriusXM announced it was dropping the Raw Comedy/Raw Dog channel because of ‘underperformance’, and immediately launched a new comedy channel owned by A‑list comic Sebastian Maniscalco. Maniscalco later clarified he had no role in the decision.
According to the advocacy group Stand Up for Standup, Raw Comedy had aired material from more than 800 comedians each month, paying each performer $15 in royalties for every spin of their routine.
The same group reports that the rebranded channel featured only 275 comedians last month, and that over 75 % of all plays went to the top 50 artists – including household names such as Chris Rock, Kevin Hart and Jim Gaffigan.
Comedian Liz Miele told the CBC’s As It Happens that the shutdown cost her roughly a quarter of her monthly income, a loss she says threatens her ability to keep touring and supporting her family.
The shift concentrates royalty revenue among a small elite of star comics while stripping working‑class performers of a reliable income stream and a platform for exposure, illustrating how media consolidation can reshape earnings for creators.
