Drinking Less Alcohol Can Lower Blood Pressure

New research shows that having just one drink a day can raise blood pressure and cholesterol. The researchers were surprised to find that even a little drinking could have a big impact.
High blood pressure can cause serious health problems like heart attacks and strokes. Exercise, weight loss, and less caffeine, alcohol, and salt can help.
The study looked at data from over 19,000 people in the US, Korea, and Japan. It found a link between drinking and higher blood pressure.
The researchers found that people who drank one drink a day had higher blood pressure than those who didn't drink. This was true even for people who only had one drink.
The study also found that men who drank had higher diastolic blood pressure, but women did not.
The lead researcher said, 'We did not find any benefits to drinking a little alcohol compared to not drinking at all.'
He also said, 'We were surprised to find that drinking a little alcohol was linked to higher blood pressure over time, although not as high as for heavy drinkers.'
The researcher said that alcohol is not the only thing that raises blood pressure, but it does have a big impact. He recommends limiting or avoiding alcohol.
Another expert said that people with higher blood pressure may benefit from drinking less or no alcohol.
He added that people with slightly high blood pressure may benefit the most from not drinking.
The study found that drinking 12 grams of alcohol a day raised blood pressure by 1.25 mmHg. Drinking 48 grams a day raised it by 4.9 mmHg.
Men who drank 48 grams a day had a bigger increase in diastolic blood pressure. The researchers also looked at the effects of drinking on cholesterol.
A nurse from the British Heart Foundation said, 'This study shows that even a little drinking can raise blood pressure over time.'
She also said, 'However, we need more research to know for sure if drinking causes high blood pressure.'
The nurse said, 'If you drink, stay within the guidelines and have some alcohol-free days.'
Drinking too much can cause health problems like high blood pressure. Try to have some days without alcohol.
Alcohol is not the only thing that can affect blood pressure. Other factors can also increase the risk of heart disease.
Eating well, exercising, not smoking, and keeping a healthy weight can all help reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
