Five Dead After Fire on Indonesian Ferry
Rescuers in Indonesia are looking for people who might be missing after a ferry caught fire. They saved 229 people and found five dead bodies.
The ferry, Mutiara Sentosa 2, was going from Surabaya to Makassar. It had 232 passengers and 39 crew members when the fire started between 6 and 7 am. The fire happened near Sumenep regency.
But on Monday, officials said more people were on the ferry than they thought. They are not sure how many are still missing after saving 229 people.
Officials are asking families of victims and survivors to help find out how many are missing.
In Indonesia, the number of people on a boat is often different from what is listed. This can make it hard to find people who are missing. Nanang Sigit, who is in charge of search and rescue in Surabaya, said this.
The cause of the fire is still not known.
The ferry was also carrying 180 vehicles and an excavator.
A survivor, Ahmad Abdul Karim, said the fire started from a truck on the lower deck.
The fire spread very quickly because of the wind. Everyone was told to move to the front of the ferry in less than 30 minutes.
Rescue teams sent a boat from Surabaya to help. The Indonesian navy and other ships near the area also assisted.
The ferry was built in Japan in 1992 and was sold to Indonesia in 2015. It is 160 meters long and can carry 689 passengers and 49 crew members, along with up to 181 vehicles.
The Mutiara Sentosa 2 goes from Surabaya to Makassar, a trip that usually takes 40 hours. It is mostly used by people traveling within Indonesia and for carrying goods between Java and Sulawesi.
Indonesia has more than 17,000 islands, and ferries are a common way to travel. Accidents happen often, and weak safety rules are often to blame.
