Senate Democrats stopped a key part of the SAVE America Act that they used to support.
On Saturday, Senate Republicans tried to get Democrats to support a simple voter ID bill. They did not succeed.
Many Democrats, including Schumer, have said they support voter ID. Some states with Democratic senators already have voter ID laws.
Schumer and Democrats said they support voter ID, but then they blocked the GOP's amendment to require it.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer spoke at a news conference. He said Democrats support voter ID.
Schumer said, 'Democrats support voter ID.' He included it in their Freedom to Vote legislation years ago.
Schumer and all Democrats voted against the bill from Sen. Jon Husted. Thirty-six states already require identification to vote.
It was the last vote of the night for the Senate. They are leaving Washington for several weeks to campaign.
Senate Republicans want a deadline for counting votes in California.
Republicans have tried to pass the SAVE America Act, but Democrats have blocked it many times.
Husted's bill would require people to show a valid ID to vote in federal elections.
The bill listed many types of valid IDs, including driver's licenses and passports.
This is not the first time Democrats have blocked the bill. They did it in March too.

Senator Mike Lee is a Republican from Utah. He supports the SAVE America Act.
After it was clear the SAVE America Act would not pass, Republicans tried one last time to get Democrats to support voter ID.
Senator Lee said many Democrats have said they are fine with voter ID. They said it many times in February and March.
Lee said Democrats argued they were okay with voter ID, but they did not like other parts of the bill.
Lee has been a strong supporter of the SAVE America Act. He wants his colleagues to pass it.

Earlier, Republicans could have started working on a version of the SAVE America Act, but Trump told them to stop.
Now, the Senate will not return until September, just before the midterm elections.
