University of Washington Cancels Lecture by Controversial Streamer Hasan Piker
A University of Washington lecture featuring Hasan Piker was canceled due to a flawed planning process.
Piker, a streamer and YouTube personality, was set to appear in January as part of the school's Speaker Series.
The university canceled the event after reviewing the planning process.
Mark Halperin called Hasan Piker a 'horrible person' as Democrats face pressure to distance themselves from the streamer.
Hasan Piker appeared at the Vancouver Convention Centre in Vancouver, Canada, on May 13, 2026.
The university said the planning process did not meet the necessary standards for University-hosted events.
The university will update its procedures to ensure standards are met for future events, especially on divisive topics.
The cancellation of Piker's lecture prompted criticism from First Amendment advocates, including the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression.
The organization asked the university to be transparent about what standards were not met and how they were applied.
A Fox News poll found that faith in higher education in the US is collapsing.
Hasan Piker spoke at a press conference during the Web Summit Vancouver at the Vancouver Convention Centre.
Public universities can set standards for events, but they cannot use those standards to cancel a speaker due to their views.
Andrew Kolvet, executive producer of the Charlie Kirk Show, said the university should let Piker speak as long as he does not call for harm to his opponents.
Piker, a socialist, rose to fame after making controversial comments and faced backlash for calling for Democrats to face consequences for not supporting Abdul El-Sayed.
Piker suggested using 'Marxist-Leninist' punishment against those who do not follow the party line, but acknowledged debate is necessary to reach a decision.
Hasan Piker called for Democrats who oppose Abdul El-Sayed to be 'punished'.
The University of Washington canceled Hasan Piker's campus speaking engagement, which was scheduled for January 2027.
Piker's comments came two days after El-Sayed secured the Democratic nomination, and Piker had previously appeared alongside El-Sayed on the campaign trail.
Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville criticized Piker's rhetoric and said he would leave the party if Piker becomes a force in it.
Carville said the Democrats will have to decide in the 2028 primary which direction the party is headed, as Piker's viewpoints become more prevalent.
Former DNC Vice Chair David Hogg claimed Democratic moderates 'don't have the right values'.
Carville told Fox News Digital that the 2028 presidential election will resolve the party's direction and that there will be robust representation from different wings of the party.
