Trump Delays Senate Budget Plan, Postponing GOP's SAVE America Push
Senate Republicans left Washington without passing the SAVE America Act, a major item on their to-do list.
The SAVE America Act has been a top priority for President Trump, but it has also been heavily criticized by Democrats.
Some Republicans promised to stay in Washington until September to pass the voter integrity bill, but they left anyway. The bill will have to wait until next month. Its supporters seem okay with this outcome.
Schumer gave in, and Republicans won the shutdown debate after months of uncertainty.
President Trump met with Team USA Olympians at the White House. He hosted a reception for them in the East Room.
Senator Mike Lee said, 'We're not giving up on SAVE. It's just a matter of time.'
Time is running out for this session of Congress.
When the Senate returns in September, it will work on two big bills about cryptocurrency and college sports.
Then they will leave again for most of October to prepare for the midterm elections in November.
Schumer said Democrats support voter ID, but all Senate Democrats voted against the GOP bill.
Another priority for Trump, the budget reconciliation process, was delayed.
Republicans want to pass the SAVE America Act without Democrats being able to block it. They were ready to vote on a $150 billion budget plan, but Trump stopped them.
The vote was paused after some senators met with Trump. They decided to work on a better budget plan in August and September.
Johnson said Trump agreed that they should work on a better budget plan. They want to increase defense spending by $350 billion.
It's unclear if the plan to get states to adopt parts of the SAVE America Act will work.
Blanche survived Republican opposition as Trump got his new Attorney General.
Some Senate Republicans don't want to use reconciliation to pass a budget without cost-of-living elements.
Thune said there was a desire among Republicans to use reconciliation to pass defense funding and parts of the SAVE America Act.
Thune hasn't been keen on using reconciliation again, but that might be changing.
Thune said, 'I think we'll need to do another reconciliation bill at some point.'
Republicans accomplished some of their goals on Saturday morning.
They passed a short-term funding extension and a Russia sanctions package. They also confirmed Todd Blanche as Attorney General.
But Democrats blocked a voter ID bill and a cryptocurrency bill.

One notable omission was a vote on canceling the August recess.
Lee had pushed for a vote on the Senate floor but accepted a voice vote instead.
Lee said it would have been better if they had passed the SAVE America Act already. He said they don't have the votes right now.
Johnson said the reason they can't pass the bill is because Democrats refuse to vote for voter integrity measures.
