Why FBI Extraditions Jumped Under Director Kash Patel
In his first 18 months, Patel placed 100 calls to foreign law‑enforcement partners, while his predecessor made only nine calls during the final 18 months of the Biden administration. During the same period, extraditions increased by 65 % and foreign transfers of custody (FTOCs) rose by 54 % compared with the last 18 months of the previous administration. The FBI completed 157 extraditions and 86 FTOCs in that time.
Patel says the surge is a direct result of two factors: former President Donald Trump’s relationships with foreign governments, which open new channels for cooperation, and Attorney General Todd Blanche’s legal tools that give the FBI clearer authority to secure the return of suspects.
The higher volume of extraditions means that more high‑value targets who have fled abroad are now facing U.S. charges, reinforcing the agency’s policy of giving “no sanctuary” to those accused of serious crimes.
