Why Singapore’s Haze Is Rising: Indonesian Fires and a Super El Nino

Indonesian fires across Sumatra and Borneo have been burning since mid‑July, and dry conditions were intensified by a so‑called Super El Nino. The persistent smoke has drifted northward, blanketing the city with haze.
Haze also affected Metro Manila, linked to fires in Kalimantan carried by prevailing winds, Philippine authorities warned that fine PM2.5 particles could stay high for several days.
The thick haze reduces visibility and can irritate the eyes and lungs, especially for people with asthma or heart problems. Residents are therefore urged to stay indoors and limit outdoor exercise until the air improves.
