Hundreds of people set up a camp in Madrid’s Puerta del Sol to protest the eviction.

Health Minister Monica Garcia said the ruling Socialists and junior partner Sumar had reached an agreement on new housing measures, including a ban on evictions until 2030 and the automatic renewal of leases until 2028.

Housing Minister Isabel Rodriguez told a news conference that the plan also targets “vulture funds” such as UrbaGestion, the small company that carried out Abascal’s eviction.

The lawyer for Maricarmen Abascal said UrbaGestion had offered a preliminary agreement that would let her return if she agrees to pay 30 % of her pension – about €500 a month – for the next eight years.

Social Affairs Minister Pablo Bustinduy explained that the measures will be divided into two separate decrees, both of which will be presented to parliament for a vote.

The proposals show how a single high‑profile eviction can trigger nationwide protests and push a fragmented government to consider sweeping reforms aimed at protecting tenants and curbing speculative housing funds.
