New ETFs and REITs Offer Vietnamese Investors Low‑Cost, Diversified Options
Nguyen Minh Hoang, Analysis Director at Nhat Viet Securities Joint Stock Company (VFS), says ETFs give individual investors a simple, accessible and low‑cost way to join the market and reduce exposure to fluctuations in single stocks. He also notes that ETF trading now makes up only 1–2% of Vietnam’s total market trading value, far lower than the 20–30% seen in Korea, about 28% in the United States and 11% in Europe.
The draft amended Securities Law will broaden the range of assets that can be used to create ETFs, which could include new products such as gold ETFs. This change aims to expand choices for investors while keeping costs low.
Real estate investment trusts (REITs) provide a liquid channel for property investment and help real‑estate businesses restructure their assets. Their growth will depend on appropriate tax policies and clear rules for valuing and transferring assets into funds.
Nguyen Thi Bich Nga, deputy head of the State Securities Commission’s Department for Fund Management Companies and Securities Investment Funds Regulation, says the commission is refining the legal framework and amending the Securities Law to introduce an ETF definition and to expand the number of investment funds. These regulatory steps are meant to make ETFs and REITs easier to launch and safer for investors.
