How a Doctor on a Vietnam Airlines Flight Handled a Medical Emergency
Pham Thi Van Thanh, a former endoscopy doctor at Cho Ray Hospital, was on the plane when the incident happened. She rushed to the unconscious woman, performed chest compressions and, together with the crew, gave her three to four cups of warm sugar water.
The woman’s blood pressure was initially 80/50 mmHg. After about 15 minutes, it rose to 100/60 mmHg, her face and lips regained colour, and she was able to communicate. She also showed signs of vomiting, so Thanh turned her onto her side to prevent choking.
The passenger was an Australian tourist who had spent 14 days touring Vietnam before heading home. She was monitored continuously for the rest of the flight to Tan Son Nhat International Airport.
Thanh’s more than 20 years of experience in respiratory endoscopy and her current role as a medical adviser helped her stay calm and apply effective first‑aid. The episode demonstrates that basic CPR, simple supportive care and vital‑sign monitoring can save a life on board.
