Why Restoring Dai Giac Pagoda Matters for Heritage and Community Resilience
The pagoda is a key Buddhist pilgrimage destination. Its tower, visible across Dong Hoi, houses the jade Buddha and the relics of Most Venerable Thich Tri Quang, making it a spiritual landmark for many worshippers.
In 2013 a devastating typhoon swept the area, leaving only a standing Buddha statue amid the ruins. Monks and followers mobilised, and by 2016 a spacious new main worship hall had been completed, restoring the centre for worship.
According to Venerable Thich Phuong Ho, monks have restored more than 100 of over 500 historic pagodas in Nghe An, while in the former Quang Binh province only slightly more than 10 of over 200 documented sites have been restored so far. The article notes that restoring historic pagodas preserves longstanding historical, cultural and spiritual traditions and provides worship spaces and spiritual support for local communities.
The region continues to face economic hardship and severe natural disasters, making the monks' commitment to heritage preservation crucial. By protecting and reviving ancient pagodas, they help keep cultural identity alive and give communities a place of spiritual refuge.
