India and Qatar’s Unique Bids for the 2036 Olympics
India’s proposal focuses on Ahmedabad, the city slated to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. Ahmedabad already houses the world’s largest cricket stadium, named after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, providing a ready‑made venue for large‑scale events.
Qatar’s bid leans on its recent experience hosting world championships across most top‑tier Olympic sports, most notably the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The plan could see some competitions held in neighbouring Gulf states, extending the Olympic footprint.
If Qatar wins, the Summer Games may have to move out of their traditional July‑August window – a schedule that has been in place since Athens 2004 – to accommodate the region’s climate.
This possible shift shows how climate and existing infrastructure can influence a city’s Olympic chances.
