Hyrox Beijing incident shows why athlete hygiene matters

Footage of the incident quickly went viral, and more than 1,000 participants kept running on the contaminated course and using shared equipment. The widespread criticism that followed highlighted the health risk.
Wietrzyk later posted a photo from her hospital bed, then deleted it, issued a public apology, withdrew from the Beijing event and forfeited all points she had earned. Her actions sparked a massive backlash on social media.
Hyrox co‑founder Moritz Fürste admitted that officials should have stopped her immediately and that the organizers failed to intervene. The competition’s regulations were updated so officials can now disqualify any athlete whose bodily fluids – blood, vomit, urine or feces – pose a hygiene risk.
The intense criticism led Wietrzyk to a mental breakdown, making her consider quitting the sport. With strong family support she returned to training, showing how personal choices in competition can affect both health safety and an athlete’s career.
