Meta Must Pay $567 Million for New Mexico Case
Meta lost a lawsuit in March because it misled people about its platform's safety and hurt children.
At that time, Meta had to pay $375 million for breaking New Mexico's consumer protection laws.
A judge in New Mexico gave Meta a new fine because it caused a teen mental health crisis. The money will help young people hurt by Meta's platforms and pay for mental health services.
The Attorney General said Meta knew its platforms were harming kids but chose profit over safety. Now, Meta has to pay for that choice.
Meta must pay almost $942 million in total.
Meta's vice president of communications said the company disagrees with the ruling and will appeal.
Meta said it works hard to keep people safe and will defend itself against claims that are not true.
The judge also told Meta to add safety features, like not letting adults talk to kids and keeping minors from talking to Meta's AI in a romantic way.
Last year, it was found that Meta's policies allowed chatbots to have romantic conversations with kids. Meta changed its policies and made its AI characters unavailable to teens for a while.
The case is about mental health and social issues related to Meta.
